On April 26, 2012, Fox announced that Fringe had been renewed for a 13-episode fifth and final season Filming of the season commenced on July 18, 2012. Actor John Noble confirmed the season would take place in the year 2036, continuing with the events seen in the fourth season episode "Letters of Transit". Noble also confirmed that actress Georgina Haig would be returning in some capacity

The team consists of FBI special agent Olivia Dunham, scientist Walter Bishop, his son Peter Bishop and others at the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. The show was renewed for a second and third season of 22 episodes each, which aired from September 17, 2009 to May 20, 2010, and September 23, 2010 to May 6, 2011, respectively. Fringe was officially renewed for a fourth season during the 2011–2012 television season which consisted of 22 episodes. On April 26, 2012, Fox renewed Fringe for a final fifth season, consisting of 13 episodes. It premiered on September 28, 2012.

In the year 2036, Peter, Astrid, Walter, and Etta set out to find Olivia and free her from amber. Once they do, they discover she holds the key to finding the plans for a weapon to defeat the Observers... but Walter is captured and interrogated for the same information.  As the rogue Fringe team continues to fight off the oppressive Observers’ invasion, unforeseen events lead them into a forest where they encounter a strange subculture of people devoted to recording human history.
